भारत में साइकिल बहुत लोकप्रिय है। बूढ़े और जवान, दूधवाला, अखबार बाँटने वाला, डाकिया और फेरीवाला एक स्थान से दूसरे स्थान जाने के लिए साइकिल का उपयोग करते हैं। आजकल बहुत-से पढ़े-लिखे युवा पर्यावरण की सुरक्षा के लिए भी साइकिल चलाते हैं।
पहली साइकिल 1816 में एक जर्मन व्यक्ति ने बनाई थी। वह पूरी तरह लकड़ी की बनी थी। सवार उसकी सीट पर बैठता था और अपने पैरों से जमीन को धक्का देकर उसे चलाता था। इंग्लैंड में इस साइकिल को “हॉबी हॉर्स (Hobby Horse)” कहा जाता था।
बाद में मैकमिलन (Macmillan) नामक एक स्कॉटिश व्यक्ति ने इसमें सुधार किया। उसने इसमें पैडल लगाए, जो लंबी छड़ों के माध्यम से पीछे वाले पहिए से जुड़े थे।
