A washerman had a donkey and a dog… the donkey thought.
हिंदी अनुवाद
एक धोबी के पास एक गधा और एक कुत्ता था। वह हर सुबह कपड़े धोने के लिए नदी पर जाता था। गधा कपड़ों का बोझ ढोता था। वह मालिक के घर के बाहर बने एक छप्पर (शेड) में रहता था, जबकि कुत्ता पूरे दिन घर के अंदर रहता था।
शाम को जब मालिक घर लौटता, तो कुत्ता उसे देखकर बहुत खुश हो जाता। वह मालिक को चाटता और उसके ऊपर कूद जाता। मालिक प्यार से कुत्ते को अपनी गोद में उठाकर घर के अंदर ले जाता।
यह देखकर गधे के मन में भी घर के अंदर रहने की इच्छा हुई। उसने सोचा, “यदि मैं भी कुत्ते की तरह मालिक पर कूदूँ और उसे चाटूँ, तो वह मुझे भी अपनी गोद में उठाकर घर के अंदर ले जाएगा।”

अगली शाम गधा घर के अंदर चला गया। वह अपने मालिक के ऊपर कूद गया और उसे चाटने लगा। लेकिन मालिक ने गधे को गोद में नहीं उठाया।
वह गधे को वापस शेड में ले गया। गधे को प्यार से सहलाते हुए मालिक ने कहा,
“तुम कुत्ते जैसे नहीं हो। तुम उससे बहुत बड़े हो, इसलिए तुम घर के अंदर नहीं रह सकते।”
मालिक ने आगे कहा,
“तुम बहुत भारी भी हो, इसलिए तुम्हें मेरे ऊपर नहीं कूदना चाहिए। मैं कुत्ते को तो उठा सकता हूँ, लेकिन तुम्हें नहीं उठा सकता। फिर भी मैं तुमसे उतना ही प्यार करता हूँ जितना कुत्ते से करता हूँ। तुम्हें समझना चाहिए कि तुम दोनों अलग-अलग हो।”
