Greatly amused by the girl’s way of speaking, the conductor said, “But you weren’t afraid to come in the bus.” लड़की के बात करने के तरीके से बहुत मनोरंजनित होकर, कंडक्टर ने कहा, “लेकिन तुम बस में आने से नहीं डरीं।”

“Nothing to be afraid of about that,” she answered. “उसमें डरने जैसा कुछ नहीं था,” उसने जवाब दिया।

The conductor shrugged, and they waited until it was time for the bus to begin the return journey. कंडक्टर ने कंधे उचकाए, और वे तब तक इंतज़ार करते रहे जब तक कि बस के वापसी की यात्रा शुरू करने का समय नहीं हो गया।

Again there weren’t many passengers. फिर से बहुत ज़्यादा यात्री नहीं थे।

“Won’t your mother be looking for you?” the conductor asked when he gave the girl her ticket. “क्या तुम्हारी माँ तुम्हें ढूँढ नहीं रही होगी?” कंडक्टर ने लड़की को उसका टिकट देते हुए पूछा।

“No, no one will be looking for me,” she said. “नहीं, कोई मुझे नहीं ढूँढ रहा होगा,” उसने कहा।

The bus started, and again there were the same wonderful sights. बस चल पड़ी, और फिर से वही अद्भुत दृश्य थे।

Valli wasn’t bored in the slightest and greeted everything with the same excitement she’d felt the first time. वल्ली थोड़ी भी ऊब नहीं रही थी और उसने हर चीज़ का उसी उत्साह के साथ स्वागत किया जो उसने पहली बार महसूस किया था।

But suddenly she saw a young cow lying dead by the roadside, just where it had been struck by some fast-moving vehicle. लेकिन अचानक उसने सड़क के किनारे एक मरी हुई युवा गाय को देखा, ठीक उसी जगह जहाँ उसे किसी तेज़ चलने वाले वाहन ने टक्कर मारी थी।

The conductor nodded, and she was overcome with sadness. कंडक्टर ने सिर हिलाया, और वह उदासी से भर गई।

The bus moved on. The memory of the dead cow haunted her, dampening her enthusiasm. बस आगे बढ़ गई। मरी हुई गाय की याद उसे परेशान कर रही थी, जिससे उसका उत्साह कम हो गया।

She no longer wanted to look out the window. वह अब खिड़की से बाहर नहीं देखना चाहती थी।

She sat thus, glued to her seat, until the bus reached her village at three forty. वह इस तरह अपनी सीट से चिपकी रही, जब तक कि बस तीन बजकर चालीस मिनट पर उसके गाँव नहीं पहुँच गई।

She stood up and stretched herself. Then she turned to the conductor and said, “Well, sir, 1 hope to see you again.” वह खड़ी हुई और अपने शरीर को फैलाया। फिर वह कंडक्टर की तरफ़ मुड़ी और कहा, “ठीक है, सर, मुझे उम्मीद है कि मैं आपसे फिर मिलूँगी।”

“Okay, madam,” he answered her, smiling. “Whenever you feel like a bus ride, come and join us. And don’t forget to bring your fare.” “ठीक है, मैडम,” उसने मुस्कुराते हुए जवाब दिया। “जब भी तुम्हारा बस की सवारी का मन करे, आना और हमसे जुड़ना। और अपना किराया लाना मत भूलना।”

She laughed and jumped down from the bus. वह हँसी और बस से कूद गई।

Then away she went, running straight for home. फिर वह सीधे घर की ओर दौड़ती हुई चली गई।

When she entered her house she found her mother awake and talking to one of Valli’s aunts, the one from South Street. जब वह अपने घर में दाखिल हुई तो उसने अपनी माँ को जागा हुआ पाया और वह वल्ली की एक चाची से बात कर रही थी, जो दक्षिण गली से थी।

This aunt was a real chatterbox, never closing her mouth once she started talking. यह चाची एक असली बातूनी थी, एक बार जब वह बात करना शुरू कर देती थी तो अपना मुँह कभी बंद नहीं करती थी।

“And where have you been?” said her aunt when Valli came in. She spoke very casually, not expecting a reply. “और तुम कहाँ थीं?” उसकी चाची ने कहा जब वल्ली अंदर आई। उसने बहुत ही लापरवाही से बात की, जवाब की उम्मीद नहीं थी।

So Valli just smiled, and her mother and aunt went on with their conversation. इसलिए वल्ली बस मुस्कुराई, और उसकी माँ और चाची अपनी बातचीत जारी रखीं।
