Swami is a nine-year-old boy, who lives in Malgudi village with his parents and grandmother.
स्वामी नौ साल का लड़का है, जो मालगुड़ी गाँव में अपने माता-पिता और दादी के साथ रहता है।

One day, his father was reading a newspaper.
एक दिन, उसके पिता अख़बार पढ़ रहे थे।

Father: Swami, listen to this — a news of the bravery of a village lad who, while returning home by the jungle path, came face to face with a tiger till some people came that way and killed the tiger.
पिता: स्वामी, यह सुनो — एक गाँव के लड़के की बहादुरी की खबर, जो जंगल के रास्ते घर लौटते समय एक बाघ के सामने आ गया, जब तक कि कुछ लोग वहाँ आकर बाघ को मार नहीं देते।

After reading it through, father looked at Swami and asked, “What do you say to that?”
पूरा पढ़ने के बाद, पिता ने स्वामी की ओर देखा और पूछा, “इस बारे में तुम्हारा क्या कहना है?”

Swami: I think he must have been a very strong and grown-up person, not at all a boy. How could a boy fight a tiger?
स्वामी: मुझे लगता है वह बहुत ताकतवर और बड़ा आदमी होगा, बिल्कुल भी लड़का नहीं। कोई लड़का बाघ से कैसे लड़ सकता है?

Father: A man may have the strength of an elephant and yet be a coward, whereas another man, who may have the strength of a straw but has courage, can do anything.
पिता: कोई आदमी हाथी जितना ताकतवर हो सकता है लेकिन फिर भी डरपोक हो सकता है, जबकि कोई दूसरा आदमी, जो तिनके जितना कमजोर हो लेकिन साहस रखता हो, वह कुछ भी कर सकता है।

Swami: Suppose I have all the courage. What can I do if a tiger attacks me?
स्वामी: मान लो मेरे पास सारा साहस है, तो भी अगर बाघ मुझ पर हमला करे तो मैं क्या करूँगा?

Father: Let alone strength, can you prove you have courage? Let me see if you can sleep alone tonight in my office.
पिता: ताकत की बात छोड़ो, क्या तुम साबित कर सकते हो कि तुम्हारे पास साहस है? देखता हूँ, क्या तुम आज रात मेरे दफ्तर में अकेले सो सकते हो?

(Swami had always slept beside his granny which irritated his father.)
(स्वामी हमेशा अपनी दादी के पास सोता था, जिससे उसके पिता चिढ़ते थे।)

Swami: From the first of the next month I will sleep alone, father.
स्वामी: अगले महीने की पहली तारीख से मैं अकेले सोऊँगा, पिताजी।

Father: No, you must do it from today.
पिता: नहीं, तुम्हें आज से ही करना होगा।

In the evening, Swami went to his granny and slept under her blanket.
शाम को, स्वामी अपनी दादी के पास गया और उनकी रजाई में सो गया।

His father came and said to him — Father: Get up.
उसके पिता आए और बोले — पिता: उठो।

Granny: Why do you disturb him?
दादी: आप इसे क्यों परेशान कर रहे हैं?

(Father rolled his bed and took it under his arms)
(पिता ने अपना बिस्तर समेटा और बाँहों में ले लिया)

Father: Come with me.
पिता: मेरे साथ चलो।

Swami: Let me sleep in the hall, please! Your office is very dusty and there may be scorpions behind your law books.
स्वामी: मुझे हॉल में सोने दीजिए! आपका दफ्तर बहुत धूल भरा है और आपकी कानून की किताबों के पीछे बिच्छू भी हो सकते हैं।

Father: No, you must learn not to be afraid of darkness. It is only a question of habit. You must cultivate good habits.
पिता: नहीं, तुम्हें अँधेरे से डरना छोड़ना होगा। यह सिर्फ आदत की बात है। तुम्हें अच्छी आदतें विकसित करनी चाहिए।

As the night advanced and the silence in the house deepened, Swami’s heart beat faster.
जैसे-जैसे रात बढ़ी और घर में सन्नाटा गहराया, स्वामी का दिल तेज़ धड़कने लगा।

He remembered all the stories of devils and ghosts he had heard in his life.
उसे अपनी ज़िंदगी में सुनी हुई सारी भूत-प्रेत की कहानियाँ याद आ गईं।

He shut his eyes tight and covered himself with his blanket under the bench.
उसने अपनी आँखें कसकर बंद कीं और बेंच के नीचे रजाई में खुद को ढक लिया।

He put his hand out to feel granny’s presence at his side, as it was his habit, but he only touched the wooden leg of the bench.
उसने दादी की मौजूदगी महसूस करने के लिए हाथ बाहर निकाला, जैसा कि उसकी आदत थी, लेकिन उसे सिर्फ बेंच का लकड़ी का पैर छूने को मिला।

He sweated with fright.
वह डर के मारे पसीने से तर हो गया।

Swami moved to the edge of the bench. He stared into the darkness.
स्वामी बेंच के किनारे की ओर खिसक गया। उसने अँधेरे में घूरकर देखा।

Something was moving down. As it came nearer, thinking it is a ghost, he crawled out from under the bench and hugged it with all his might.
कुछ नीचे की ओर सरक रहा था। जैसे ही वह पास आया, उसे भूत समझकर, वह बेंच के नीचे से रेंगता हुआ बाहर निकला और उसे पूरी ताकत से पकड़ लिया।

He used his teeth on it like a weapon. The creature yelled out in pain.
उसने उसे हथियार की तरह दाँतों से काटा। वह जीव दर्द से चिल्ला उठा।

In a moment his father, the cook, and a servant came in carrying a light.
क्षण भर में उसके पिता, रसोइया और एक नौकर रोशनी लेकर अंदर आए।

All the three fell on the burglar who lay amidst the furniture with a bleeding ankle.
तीनों उस चोर पर टूट पड़े जो फर्नीचर के बीच पड़ा था और उसका टखना खून से लथपथ था।

Father called the police. The police was grateful to Swami as he had caught the notorious thief.
पिता ने पुलिस को बुलाया। पुलिस स्वामी की आभारी थी क्योंकि उसने कुख्यात चोर को पकड़ लिया था।

The next day in the school, Swami’s classmates congratulated him and looked at him with respect.
अगले दिन स्कूल में, स्वामी के सहपाठियों ने उसे बधाई दी और सम्मान की नज़र से देखा।

The headmaster said that Swami was a true scout.
प्रधानाध्यापक ने कहा कि स्वामी एक सच्चा स्काउट है।

The news of his bravery was also published in Malgudi Times.
उसकी बहादुरी की खबर मालगुड़ी टाइम्स में भी प्रकाशित हुई।
