IN the Kingdom of Fools, both the king and the minister were idiots.

They didn’t want to run things like other kings, so they decided to change night into day and day into night.

They ordered that everyone should be awake at night, till their fields and run their businesses only after dark, and go to bed as soon as the sun came up.

One day a guru and his disciple arrived in the city.

It was a beautiful city, it was broad daylight, but there was no one about.
यह एक सुंदर शहर था, दिन का उजाला था, लेकिन आसपास कोई नहीं था।

Everyone was asleep, not a mouse stirring. Even the cattle had been taught to sleep by day.

The two strangers were amazed by what they saw around them and wandered around town till evening, when suddenly the whole town woke up and went about its nightly business.

The two men were hungry. Now that the shops were open, they went to buy some groceries.
दोनों आदमी भूखे थे। अब जब दुकानें खुल गई थीं, तो वे कुछ किराने का सामान खरीदने गए।

To their astonishment, they found that everything cost the same, a single duddu — whether they bought a measure of rice or a bunch of bananas, it cost a duddu.
उन्हें यह देखकर आश्चर्य हुआ कि हर चीज़ की कीमत एक समान थी, एक डुड्डु — चाहे वे एक माप चावल खरीदें या केलों का एक गुच्छा, उसकी कीमत एक डुड्डु थी।

The guru and his disciple were delighted. They had never heard of anything like this.

They could buy all the food they wanted for a rupee.

When they had cooked and eaten, the guru realised that this was a kingdom of fools and it wouldn’t be a good idea for them to stay there.
जब उन्होंने खाना बना लिया और खा लिया, तो गुरु को एहसास हुआ कि यह मूर्खों का राज्य था और उनके लिए वहाँ रहना एक अच्छा विचार नहीं होगा।

“This is no place for us. Let’s go,” he said to his disciple.
“यह हमारे लिए कोई जगह नहीं है। चलो चलें,” उन्होंने अपने शिष्य से कहा।

But the disciple didn’t want to leave the place. Everything was cheap here. All he wanted was good, cheap food.
लेकिन शिष्य उस जगह को छोड़ना नहीं चाहता था। यहाँ सब कुछ सस्ता था। उसे बस अच्छा, सस्ता भोजन चाहिए था।

The guru said, “They are all fools. This won’t last very long, and you can’t tell what they’ll do to you next.”
गुरु ने कहा, “वे सभी मूर्ख हैं। यह बहुत लंबा नहीं चलेगा, और तुम नहीं बता सकते कि वे तुम्हारे साथ आगे क्या करेंगे।”

But the disciple wouldn’t listen to the guru’s wisdom. He wanted to stay.

The guru finally gave up and said, “Do what you want. I’m going,” and left.
गुरु ने आखिरकार हार मान ली और कहा, “तुम्हें जो करना है करो। मैं जा रहा हूँ,” और चले गए।

The disciple stayed on, ate his fill every day — bananas and ghee and rice and wheat, and grew fat like a street-side sacred bull.
शिष्य वहीं रुक गया, हर दिन पेट भरकर खाता — केले और घी और चावल और गेहूँ, और गली के किनारे के एक पवित्र साँड की तरह मोटा हो गया।

One bright day, a thief broke into a rich merchant’s house.
एक उज्ज्वल दिन, एक चोर एक अमीर व्यापारी के घर में घुस गया।

He had made a hole in the wall and sneaked in, and as he was carrying out his loot, the wall of the old house collapsed on his head and killed him on the spot.

His brother ran to the king and complained, “Your Highness, when my brother was pursuing his ancient trade, a wall fell on him and killed him.
उसका भाई राजा के पास दौड़ा गया और शिकायत की, “महाराज, जब मेरा भाई अपना पुश्तैनी धंधा कर रहा था, तो एक दीवार उस पर गिर गई और वह मर गया।

This merchant is to blame. He should have built a good, strong wall.
यह व्यापारी दोषी है। उसे एक अच्छी, मजबूत दीवार बनानी चाहिए थी।

You must punish the wrongdoer and compensate the family for this injustice.”
आपको अपराधी को दंडित करना चाहिए और इस अन्याय के लिए परिवार को मुआवजा देना चाहिए।”

The king said, “Justice will be done. Don’t worry,” and at once summoned the owner of the house.
राजा ने कहा, “न्याय होगा। चिंता मत करो,” और तुरंत घर के मालिक को बुलाया।

When the merchant arrived, the king questioned him.
जब व्यापारी आया, तो राजा ने उससे पूछताछ की।

“What’s your name?”
“तुम्हारा नाम क्या है?”

“Such and Such, Your Highness.”
“फलाना-फलाना, महाराज।”

“Were you at home when the dead man burgled your house?”
“जब मृत व्यक्ति ने तुम्हारे घर में सेंधमारी की तो क्या तुम घर पर थे?”

“Yes, My Lord. He broke in and the wall was weak. It fell on him.”
“हाँ, मेरे प्रभु। वह अंदर घुस गया और दीवार कमजोर थी। वह उस पर गिर गई।”

“The accused pleads guilty. Your wall killed this man’s brother. You have murdered a man. We have to punish you.”
“आरोपी अपना अपराध स्वीकार करता है। तुम्हारी दीवार ने इस आदमी के भाई को मार डाला है। तुमने एक आदमी की हत्या की है। हमें तुम्हें दंड देना होगा।”

“Lord,” said the helpless merchant, “I didn’t put up the wall. It’s really the fault of the man who built the wall. He didn’t build it right. You should punish him.”
“प्रभु,” असहाय व्यापारी ने कहा, “मैंने दीवार नहीं बनाई। यह वास्तव में उस आदमी की गलती है जिसने दीवार बनाई थी। उसने इसे ठीक से नहीं बनाया। आपको उसे दंड देना चाहिए।”

“Who is that?”
“वह कौन है?”

“My Lord, this wall was built in my father’s time. I know the man. He’s an old man now. He lives nearby.”
“मेरे प्रभु, यह दीवार मेरे पिता के समय में बनी थी। मैं उस आदमी को जानता हूँ। वह अब एक बूढ़ा आदमी है। वह पास में ही रहता है।”

The king sent out messengers to bring in the bricklayer who had built the wall. They brought him, tied hand and foot.
राजा ने उस राजमिस्त्री को लाने के लिए दूत भेजे जिसने दीवार बनाई थी। वे उसे हाथ-पैर बांधकर ले आए।

“You there, did you build this man’s wall in his father’s time?”
“तुम वहाँ, क्या तुमने इस आदमी के पिता के समय में उसकी दीवार बनाई थी?”

“Yes, My Lord, I did.”
“हाँ, मेरे प्रभु, मैंने बनाई थी।”

“What kind of a wall is this that you built? It has fallen on a poor man and killed him. You’ve murdered him. We have to punish you by death.”
“यह किस तरह की दीवार है जो तुमने बनाई? यह एक गरीब आदमी पर गिर गई है और उसे मार डाला है। तुमने उसकी हत्या की है। हमें तुम्हें मौत की सजा देनी होगी।”

Before the king could order the execution, the poor bricklayer pleaded, “Please listen to me before you give your orders.
इससे पहले कि राजा फाँसी का आदेश दे पाता, बेचारे राजमिस्त्री ने विनती की, “कृपया अपने आदेश देने से पहले मेरी बात सुन लीजिए।

It’s true I built this wall and it was no good. But that was because my mind was not on it.
यह सच है कि मैंने यह दीवार बनाई थी और यह अच्छी नहीं थी। लेकिन ऐसा इसलिए था क्योंकि मेरा मन इस पर नहीं था।

I remember very well a dancing girl who was going up and down that street all day with her anklets jingling, and I couldn’t keep my eyes or my mind on the wall I was building.
मुझे बहुत अच्छी तरह याद है एक नाचने वाली लड़की जो दिन भर अपनी पायल छनकाते हुए उस गली में ऊपर-नीचे जा रही थी, और मैं अपनी आँखें या अपना मन उस दीवार पर नहीं रख सका जो मैं बना रहा था।

You must get that dancing girl. I know where she lives.”
आपको उस नाचने वाली लड़की को लाना चाहिए। मैं जानता हूँ कि वह कहाँ रहती है।”

“You’re right. The case deepens. We must look into it. It is not easy to judge such complicated cases. Let’s get that dancer, wherever she is.”
“तुम सही हो। मामला गहराता जा रहा है। हमें इसकी जाँच करनी चाहिए। ऐसे जटिल मामलों का न्याय करना आसान नहीं है। उस नर्तकी को लाओ, वह जहाँ भी हो।”

The dancing girl, now an old woman, came trembling to the court.
नृत्य करने वाली लड़की, जो अब एक बूढ़ी औरत थी, कांपते हुए दरबार में आई।

“Did you walk up and down that street many years ago, while this poor man was building a wall? Did you see him?”
“क्या तुम कई साल पहले उस गली में ऊपर-नीचे चलती थीं, जब यह बेचारा आदमी एक दीवार बना रहा था? क्या तुमने उसे देखा था?”

“Yes, My Lord, I remember it very well.”
“हाँ, मेरे प्रभु, मुझे यह बहुत अच्छी तरह याद है।”

“So you did walk up and down, with your anklets jingling. You were young and you distracted him, so he built a bad wall.
“तो तुम अपनी पायल छनकाते हुए ऊपर-नीचे चली थीं। तुम जवान थीं और तुमने उसका ध्यान भटका दिया, इसलिए उसने एक खराब दीवार बनाई।

It has fallen on a poor burglar and killed him. You’ve killed an innocent man. You’ll have to be punished.”

She thought for a minute and said, “My Lord, wait. I know now why I was walking up and down that street.

I had given some gold to the goldsmith to make some jewellery for me.

He was a lazy scoundrel. He made so many excuses, said he would give it now and he would give it then and so on all day.

He made me walk up and down to his house a dozen times. That was when this bricklayer saw me.

It’s not my fault, My Lord, it’s the damned goldsmith’s fault.”

“Poor thing, she’s absolutely right,” thought the king, weighing the evidence.
“बेचारी, वह बिल्कुल सही है,” राजा ने सबूतों को तौलते हुए सोचा।

“We’ve got the real culprit at last. Get the goldsmith, wherever he is hiding. At once!”
“आखिरकार हमें असली अपराधी मिल गया है। सुनार को लाओ, वह जहाँ भी छिपा हो। तुरंत!”

The king’s bailiffs searched for the goldsmith, who was hiding in a corner of his shop.
राजा के सिपाहियों ने सुनार की तलाश की, जो अपनी दुकान के एक कोने में छिपा हुआ था।

When he heard the accusation against him, he had his own story to tell.
जब उसने अपने खिलाफ आरोप सुना, तो उसके पास बताने के लिए अपनी कहानी थी।

“My Lord,” he said, “I’m a poor goldsmith. It’s true I made this dancer come many times to my door.
“मेरे प्रभु,” उसने कहा, “मैं एक गरीब सुनार हूँ। यह सच है कि मैंने इस नर्तकी को कई बार अपने दरवाजे पर बुलवाया।

I gave her excuses because I couldn’t finish making her jewellery before I finished the rich merchant’s orders.

They had a wedding coming, and they wouldn’t wait. You know how impatient rich men are!”

“Who is this rich merchant who kept you from finishing this poor woman’s jewellery, made her walk up and down, which distracted this bricklayer, which made a mess of his wall, which has now fallen on an innocent man and killed him? Can you name him?”

The goldsmith named the merchant, and he was none other than the original owner of the house whose wall had fallen.

Now justice had come full circle, thought the king, back to the merchant.

When he was rudely summoned back to the court, he arrived crying, “It wasn’t me but my father who ordered the jewellery! He’s dead! I’m innocent!”
जब उसे अशिष्टता से वापस दरबार में बुलाया गया, तो वह रोता हुआ आया, “यह मैं नहीं था बल्कि मेरे पिता थे जिन्होंने गहनों का ऑर्डर दिया था! वह मर चुके हैं! मैं निर्दोष हूँ!”

But the king consulted his minister and ruled decisively: “It’s true your father is the true murderer. He’s dead, but somebody must be punished in his place.
लेकिन राजा ने अपने मंत्री से सलाह की और निर्णायक फैसला सुनाया: “यह सच है कि तुम्हारा पिता ही असली हत्यारा है। वह मर चुका है, लेकिन उसकी जगह किसी को सजा मिलनी चाहिए।

You’ve inherited everything from that criminal father of yours, his riches as well as his sins.
तुमने अपने उस अपराधी पिता से सब कुछ विरासत में पाया है, उसकी दौलत भी और उसके पाप भी।

I knew at once, even when I first set eyes on you, that you were at the root of this horrible crime. You must die.”
मैं तुरंत जान गया था, जब मैंने पहली बार तुम्हें देखा था, कि तुम ही इस भयानक अपराध की जड़ में थे। तुम्हें मरना होगा।”

And he ordered a new stake to be made ready for the execution.

As the servants sharpened the stake and got it ready for the final impaling of the criminal, it occurred to the minister that the rich merchant was somehow too thin to be properly executed on the stake.

He appealed to the king’s common sense. The king too worried about it.

“What shall we do?” he said, when suddenly it struck him that all they needed to do was to find a man fat enough to fit the stake.

The servants were immediately sent all over the town looking for a man who would fit the stake, and their eyes fell on the disciple who had fattened himself for months on bananas and rice and wheat and ghee.

“What have I done wrong? I’m innocent. I’m a sanyasi!” he cried.

“That may be true. But it’s the royal decree that we should find a man fat enough to fit the stake,” they said, and carried him to the place of execution.

He remembered his wise guru’s words: “This is a city of fools. You don’t know what they will do next.”

While he was waiting for death, he prayed to his guru in his heart, asking him to hear his cry wherever he was.

The guru saw everything in a vision; he had magic powers, he could see far, and he could see the future as he could see the present and the past.

He arrived at once to save his disciple, who had got himself into such a scrape through love of food.

As soon as he arrived, he scolded the disciple and told him something in a whisper.

Then he went to the king and addressed him, “O wisest of kings, who is greater? The guru or the disciple?”
फिर वह राजा के पास गया और उसे संबोधित किया, “हे सबसे बुद्धिमान राजा, कौन बड़ा है? गुरु या शिष्य?”

“Of course, the guru. No doubt about it. Why do you ask?”
“बेशक, गुरु। इसमें कोई शक नहीं। तुम क्यों पूछते हो?”

“Then put me to the stake first. Put my disciple to death after me.”
“तो पहले मुझे सूली पर चढ़ाओ। मेरे शिष्य को मेरे बाद मृत्युदंड दो।”

When the disciple heard this, he understood and began to clamour, “Me first! You brought me here first! Put me to death first, not him!”
जब शिष्य ने यह सुना, तो वह समझ गया और शोर मचाने लगा, “पहले मैं! तुम मुझे यहाँ पहले लाए थे! पहले मुझे मौत दो, उसे नहीं!”

The guru and the disciple now got into a fight about who should go first.

The king was puzzled by this behaviour. He asked the guru, “Why do you want to die? We chose him because we needed a fat man for the stake.”
राजा इस व्यवहार से हैरान था। उसने गुरु से पूछा, “तुम क्यों मरना चाहते हो? हमने उसे इसलिए चुना क्योंकि हमें सूली के लिए एक मोटे आदमी की जरूरत थी।”

“You shouldn’t ask me such questions. Put me to death first,” replied the guru.
“आपको मुझसे ऐसे सवाल नहीं पूछने चाहिए। पहले मुझे मौत दो,” गुरु ने उत्तर दिया।

“Why? There’s some mystery here. As a wise man you must make me understand.”
“क्यों? यहाँ कोई रहस्य है। एक बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति के रूप में तुम्हें मुझे समझाना होगा।”

“Will you promise to put me to death if I tell you?” asked the guru. The king gave him his solemn word.
“क्या तुम वादा करते हो कि अगर मैं तुम्हें बताऊँ तो तुम मुझे मौत दोगे?” गुरु ने पूछा। राजा ने उसे अपना पक्का वचन दिया।

The guru took him aside, out of the servants’ earshot, and whispered to him, “Do you know why we want to die right now, the two of us?
गुरु उसे एक तरफ ले गया, नौकरों की सुनने की सीमा से बाहर, और उससे फुसफुसाया, “क्या तुम जानते हो कि हम दोनों अभी क्यों मरना चाहते हैं?

We’ve been all over the world but we’ve never found a city like this or a king like you.

That stake is the stake of the god of justice. It’s new, it has never had a criminal on it.

Whoever dies on it first will be reborn as the king of this country.

We’re sick of our ascetic life. It would be nice to enjoy ourselves as king and minister for a while.
हम अपने तपस्वी जीवन से ऊब चुके हैं। कुछ समय के लिए राजा और मंत्री के रूप में आनंद लेना अच्छा होगा।

Now keep your word, My Lord, and put us to death. Me first, remember?”
अब अपना वचन रखो, मेरे प्रभु, और हमें मृत्युदंड दो। पहले मैं, याद है?”

The king was now thrown into deep thought. He didn’t want to lose the kingdom to someone else in the next round of life.
राजा अब गहरी सोच में पड़ गया। वह अगले जीवन में राज्य किसी और को नहीं खोना चाहता था।

He needed time. So he ordered the execution postponed to the next day and talked in secret with his minister.
उसे समय चाहिए था। इसलिए उसने फाँसी को अगले दिन के लिए स्थगित करने का आदेश दिया और अपने मंत्री से गुप्त रूप से बात की।

“It’s not right for us to give over the kingdom to others in the next life. Let’s go on the stake ourselves and we’ll be reborn as king and minister again. Holy men do not tell lies,” he said, and the minister agreed.

So he told the executioners, “We’ll send the criminals tonight. When the first man comes to you, put him to death first. Then do the same to the second man. Those are my orders. Don’t make any mistake.”

That night, the king and his minister went secretly to the prison, released the guru and the disciple, disguised themselves as the two, and as arranged beforehand with loyal servants, were taken to the stake and promptly executed.

When the bodies were taken down to be thrown to crows and vultures the people panicked.

Some people suddenly thought of the guru and the disciple and caught up with them as they were preparing to leave town unnoticed.

“We people need a king and a minister,” said someone. Others agreed.

They begged the guru and the disciple to be their king and their minister.

It didn’t take many arguments to persuade the disciple, but it took longer to persuade the guru.

They finally agreed to rule the kingdom of the foolish king and the silly minister, on the condition that they could change all the old laws.

From then on, night would again be night and day would again be day, and you could get nothing for a duddu.
