He stalks in his vivid stripes
वह अपनी चमकीली धारियों में शान से चलता है

The few steps of his cage,

On pads of velvet quiet,

In his quiet rage.
अपने शांत गुस्से में।

He should be lurking in shadow,
उसे तो परछाई में छिपकर बैठना चाहिए,

Sliding through long grass
लंबी घास से सरकते हुए

Near the water hole
पानी के गड्ढे के पास

Where plump deer pass.
जहाँ मोटे हिरण गुज़रते हैं।

He should be snarling around houses
उसे तो घरों के चारों ओर गुर्राना चाहिए

At the jungle’s edge,
जंगल के किनारे पर,

Baring his white fangs, his claws,
अपने सफ़ेद दाँत, अपने पंजे दिखाते हुए,

Terrorising the village!
गाँव को डराते हुए!

But he’s locked in a concrete cell,
लेकिन वह एक कंक्रीट की कोठरी में बंद है,

His strength behind bars,
उसकी ताकत सलाखों के पीछे है,

Stalking the length of his cage,
अपने पिंजरे की लंबाई में घूमते हुए,

Ignoring visitors.
आगंतुकों को नज़रअंदाज़ करते हुए।

He hears the last voice at night,
रात में वह आखिरी आवाज़ सुनता है,

The patrolling cars,
गश्त लगाती हुई कारों की,

And stares with his brilliant eyes
और अपनी शानदार आँखों से घूरता है

At the brilliant stars.
चमकदार तारों को।
