When did my childhood go?
मेरा बचपन कब चला गया?

Was it the day I ceased to be eleven,
क्या यह वह दिन था जब मैं ग्यारह साल का नहीं रहा,

Was it the time I realised that Hell and Heaven,
क्या यह वह समय था जब मैंने महसूस किया कि नरक और स्वर्ग,

Could not be found in Geography,
भूगोल में नहीं मिल सकते,

And therefore could not be,
और इसलिए हो ही नहीं सकते,

Was that the day!
क्या वह यही दिन था!

When did my childhood go?
मेरा बचपन कब चला गया?

Was it the time I realised that adults were not
क्या यह वह समय था जब मैंने महसूस किया कि वयस्क वैसे नहीं थे

all they seemed to be,
जैसे वे दिखते थे,

They talked of love and preached of love,
वे प्यार की बातें करते थे और प्यार का उपदेश देते थे,

But did not act so lovingly,
लेकिन उतना प्यार भरा व्यवहार नहीं करते थे,

Was that the day!
क्या वह यही दिन था!

When did my childhood go?
मेरा बचपन कब चला गया?

Was it when I found my mind was really mine,
क्या यह तब था जब मैंने पाया कि मेरा दिमाग वास्तव में मेरा था,

To use whichever way I choose,
जिसे मैं अपनी इच्छानुसार किसी भी तरह से उपयोग कर सकता था,

Producing thoughts that were not those of other people
ऐसे विचार उत्पन्न करते हुए जो दूसरे लोगों के नहीं थे

But my own, and mine alone
बल्कि मेरे अपने, और केवल मेरे थे

Was that the day!
क्या वह यही दिन था!

Where did my childhood go?
मेरा बचपन कहाँ चला गया?

It went to some forgotten place,
यह किसी भूली हुई जगह पर चला गया,

That’s hidden in an infant’s face,
जो एक शिशु के चेहरे में छिपा है,

That’s all I know.
मैं बस इतना ही जानता हूँ।
