Question Tags
Chapter 14: Question Tags (The "...है ना?" of English)
Aap jab Hindi mein baat karte hain, toh aksar apni baat ke अंत mein “…है ना?”, “…ठीक है?”, ya “…सही कहा ना?” jod dete hain. Jaise:
“आज मौसम अच्छा है, है ना?“
“तुम कल आओगे, ठीक है?“
Aap yeh isliye karte hain taaki saamne wala aapki baat se sehmat (agree) ho ya aapki information ko confirm kare. English mein isi kaam ke liye Question Tags ka istemal hota hai.
A Question Tag is a short question added to the end of a statement. Yeh ek chhoti si “dum” (tail) hai jo statement se jud jaati hai.
It is a beautiful day, **isn't it?**(आज का दिन सुन्दर है, है ना?)
The Golden Rule: The Positive-Negative Flip
Question Tags banane ka sabse bada rule hai “Ulta Chalo”.
Agar aapka statement Positive hai, toh tag Negative hoga.
Agar aapka statement Negative hai, toh tag Positive hoga.
Positive Statement (+):
You are a student,→ Negative Tag (-):aren't you?Negative Statement (-):
You are not a doctor,→ Positive Tag (+):are you?
How to Form a Question Tag (Tag बनाने के 3 Steps)
Step 1: Find the Helping Verb Statement mein jo Helping Verb (is, am, are, was, were, has, have, will, can, should, etc.) ho, usey pakad lijiye. Tag usi se banega.
She **is** working.(Helping Verb isis)They **have** finished.(Helping Verb ishave)
Step 2: Apply the Positive-Negative Flip Ab Golden Rule ka istemal karein.
Agar statement positive hai, toh helping verb mein
n'tjod dein (is→isn't,have→haven't).Agar statement negative hai, toh helping verb ko waisa hi rehne dein (
isn't→is,haven't→have).
Step 3: Add the Pronoun Tag ke ant mein statement ke Subject ka Pronoun (I, you, he, she, it, we, they) laga dein. Noun (jaise Ram, book) kabhi nahi lagta.
**She** is working, **isn't she?****The boys** have finished, **haven't they?**(Boys ke liye pronountheyaaya).
Tricky Rules (Jahan Galti Hoti Hai)
1. Jab Helping Verb na ho (The Hidden Helper) Simple Present aur Simple Past tense mein helping verb dikhta nahi hai. Aise mein do/does/did ki madad lein.
Simple Present:
You **play** cricket, **don't you?**He **likes** tea, **doesn't he?**
Simple Past:
They **went** home, **didn't they?**
2. The ‘I am’ Exception (Main Special Hoon) I am ka negative tag amn't I? nahi hota. Yeh ek special case hai.
I am right, **aren't I?**(Ye yaad kar lijiye!)Lekin negative statement normal hai:
I am not wrong, **am I?**
3. Commands and Requests (आज्ञा और अनुरोध) Aagya (order) ya anurodh (request) wale sentences ke liye tag aksar will you? ya won't you? hota hai.
Open the window, **will you?**Please help me, **won't you?**
4. Sentences with ‘Let’s’ Let's (Let us) se shuru hone wale suggestions ka tag hamesha shall we? hota hai.
Let's start the party, **shall we?**
5. Negative-Sounding Words (Chhupe hue Negative) Kuch shabd jaise never, seldom (kabhi-kabhaar), hardly (mushkil se), nobody, no one sentence ko Negative bana dete hain. Isliye inke saath hamesha Positive Tag lagta hai.
He **hardly** comes here, **does he?**(hardlyke kaaran statement negative hai).**Nobody** called, **did they?**(Nobodyke kaaran statement negative hai).
“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.” (महत्वपूर्ण बात यह है कि सवाल करना बंद न करें। जिज्ञासा के होने का अपना ही एक कारण है।) – Albert Einstein
