Lesson 6 The clever farmer
(This is a story of a clever farmer, who lives on the hillside where farmers do terrace farming.)
यह एक चालाक किसान की कहानी है, जो पहाड़ी इलाके में रहता था जहाँ किसान terrace farming (कटावदार खेती) करते हैं।
Once a farmer bought a field near a hillside.
एक बार एक किसान ने पहाड़ी के पास एक खेत खरीदा।
He then bought a pair of bullocks and began ploughing his field happily.
उसने दो बैल खरीदे और खुशी-खुशी खेत जोतने लगा।
Hardly had he ploughed half of the field when a tall man came and cried out angrily,
जैसे ही उसने आधा खेत जोता, एक लंबा आदमी आया और गुस्से से चिल्लाया,
“Hey, you there! My house is at the foot of this hill. What are you doing on my terrace?”
“ऐ सुनो! मेरा घर इस पहाड़ी के नीचे है। तुम मेरी छत पर क्या कर रहे हो?”
“Please do not get angry, be calm,” replied the farmer.
किसान ने जवाब दिया, “कृपया गुस्सा मत हो, शांत रहो।”
“I am ploughing the field to sow the seeds. When I grow the crop, I shall share the harvest with you every year.”
“मैं बीज बोने के लिए खेत जोत रहा हूँ। जब फसल उगेगी, मैं हर साल उसका हिस्सा तुम्हें दूँगा।”
“One year you take what grows below the ground and the next year you take what grows above the ground.”
“एक साल तुम ज़मीन के नीचे उगने वाला हिस्सा लो, और अगले साल ज़मीन के ऊपर उगने वाला हिस्सा।”
The tall man was pleased.
लंबा आदमी खुश हो गया।
He had no idea of the farmer’s plan of fooling him.
उसे किसान की चालाकी का अंदाज़ा नहीं था।
The first year, the farmer sowed wheat.
पहले साल किसान ने गेहूं बोया।
He took all the wheat as it grew above the ground and gave the roots to the tall man.
उसने सारी गेहूं ले ली क्योंकि वह ज़मीन के ऊपर उगी थी, और जड़ें लंबे आदमी को दे दीं क्योंकि वे ज़मीन के नीचे थीं।
The tall man got angry.
लंबा आदमी गुस्सा हो गया।
He told the farmer that next time he would take the part which would grow above the ground.
उसने किसान से कहा कि अगली बार वह ज़मीन के ऊपर उगने वाला हिस्सा लेगा।
The farmer agreed.
किसान ने सहमति जताई।
The next year the farmer grew groundnuts (moongphali).
अगले साल किसान ने मूँगफली बोई।
When the crop was ready, the farmer took all the groundnuts as they grew below the ground.
जब फसल तैयार हुई, किसान ने सारी मूँगफली ले ली क्योंकि वे ज़मीन के नीचे उगी थीं।
The poor tall man got only the leaves which were above the ground.
बेचारे लंबे आदमी को सिर्फ पत्तियाँ मिलीं जो ज़मीन के ऊपर थीं।
In this way the tall man was fooled by the farmer again.
इस तरह वह लंबा आदमी फिर से किसान की चालाकी का शिकार हो गया।
Moral (नीति):
Cleverness is not wisdom.
चालाकी, समझदारी नहीं होती।
