भाग–1
English: There was an old lady called ‘Kaki’… Ladli was the only one who had sympathy for ‘Kaki’.

एक बूढ़ी महिला थी जिसका नाम काकी था। उनके हाथ-पैर बहुत कमजोर हो गए थे, इसलिए वे रेंगकर चलती थीं। उनके पति का बहुत पहले ही निधन हो चुका था। वे अपने भतीजे बुद्धिराम के साथ रहती थीं। काकी ने अपनी सारी संपत्ति बुद्धिराम के नाम कर दी थी। बुद्धिराम की पत्नी का नाम रूपा था। उनके दो बेटे और एक बेटी लाडली थी।
बुद्धिराम के दोनों बेटे काकी के साथ अच्छा व्यवहार नहीं करते थे। वे उन्हें हमेशा चिढ़ाते और परेशान करते थे। काकी रोती थीं, लेकिन उनकी बात कोई नहीं सुनता था। केवल छोटी लाडली ही उनसे प्रेम करती थी और उनके प्रति दया और सहानुभूति रखती थी।

एक शाम बुद्धिराम के बड़े बेटे की सगाई थी। घर के बाहर शहनाई बज रही थी और पूरे घर में उत्सव का माहौल था। रसोई में कढ़ाही में गरमा-गरम पूड़ियाँ तली जा रही थीं। घी और मसालों की सुगंध पूरे घर में फैल रही थी।
काकी अपने अंधेरे कमरे में बैठी थीं। उन्हें पूड़ियों की खुशबू आने लगी और उनके मन में स्वादिष्ट पूड़ियों की इच्छा जाग उठी। वे धीरे-धीरे रेंगते हुए कढ़ाही के पास पहुँच गईं।
जैसे ही रूपा ने उन्हें कढ़ाही के पास बैठे देखा, वह बहुत गुस्सा हो गई। उसने काकी को दोनों हाथों से झकझोर दिया और उन्हें बुरी तरह डाँटने लगी। काकी ने एक शब्द भी नहीं कहा। वे चुपचाप अपने कमरे में लौट गईं। उनका मन अपमान से भर गया।

कुछ समय बाद भोजन तैयार हो गया। सभी मेहमान खाने लगे। काकी अपने कमरे में बैठी रहीं। वे सोच रही थीं कि जब कोई उन्हें बुलाएगा तभी वे भोजन करने जाएँगी।
स्वादिष्ट भोजन की सुगंध उन्हें बार-बार आकर्षित कर रही थी, लेकिन कोई उन्हें बुलाने नहीं आया। आखिर उन्होंने सोचा कि वे कोई मेहमान नहीं हैं जिन्हें बुलाने का इंतजार करना पड़े। इसलिए वे धीरे-धीरे आँगन में पहुँच गईं।
दुर्भाग्य से एक मेहमान ने उन्हें देख लिया और जोर से बोला, “यह बूढ़ी औरत कौन है? इसे यहाँ से हटाओ, कहीं यह किसी को छू न दे।”
यह सुनकर बुद्धिराम बहुत क्रोधित हो गए। उन्होंने काकी का हाथ पकड़कर उन्हें घसीटते हुए फिर से कमरे में पहुँचा दिया। यह सब देखकर लाडली को बहुत दुःख हुआ। उसने सोचा कि यदि काकी पहले पूड़ियाँ खा भी लेतीं तो क्या सारी पूड़ियाँ खत्म हो जातीं?

रात के लगभग ग्यारह बज चुके थे। सभी लोग सो चुके थे। लाडली ने अपनी पूड़ियाँ नहीं खाई थीं। उसने उन्हें अपनी गुड़िया की टोकरी में रखा और चुपके से काकी के कमरे में पहुँची।
उसने कहा, “उठिए काकी, मैं आपके लिए पूड़ियाँ लाई हूँ।”
काकी ने पूछा, “क्या तुम्हारी माँ ने भेजी हैं?”
लाडली ने उत्तर दिया, “नहीं, यह मेरे हिस्से की पूड़ियाँ हैं।”
काकी ने सारी पूड़ियाँ खा लीं, लेकिन उनका पेट फिर भी नहीं भरा। उन्होंने लाडली से कहा कि अपनी माँ से और पूड़ियाँ ले आओ। लाडली ने मना कर दिया क्योंकि उसकी माँ नाराज़ हो जाती।
तब काकी ने कहा, “मुझे वहाँ ले चलो जहाँ मेहमानों ने खाना खाया था।”

उसी समय रूपा की नींद खुल गई। उसने देखा कि लाडली बिस्तर पर नहीं है। वह बाहर आई तो उसने काकी को मेहमानों की जूठी पत्तलों से बचा हुआ भोजन खाते हुए देखा। यह दृश्य देखकर वह स्तब्ध रह गई। उसे अपनी गलती का गहरा एहसास हुआ। उसने सोचा कि इतने बड़े भोज में भी काकी भूखी रह गईं और केवल कुछ पूड़ियों के लिए उन्हें यह अपमान सहना पड़ा।
रूपा की आँखों में आँसू भर आए। आधी रात को वह स्वयं भोजन की थाली लेकर काकी के कमरे में पहुँची। उसने रोते हुए कहा,
“उठिए काकी। आज मुझसे बहुत बड़ी गलती हो गई। कृपया मुझे माफ़ कर दीजिए।”
रूपा की बात सुनकर काकी का हृदय पिघल गया। उन्होंने उसे क्षमा कर दिया और प्रेम से भोजन करने लगीं। भोजन के बाद उन्होंने रूपा को मन से आशीर्वाद दिया।
