It was a hot summer night; about ten o’clock.

In those days I was a great admirer of beauty and I believed in making myself look handsome.
उन दिनों मैं सुंदरता का बहुत प्रशंसक था और मुझे विश्वास था कि मुझे खुद को भी सुंदर और आकर्षक बनाना चाहिए।

I was unmarried and I was a doctor.
मैं अविवाहित था और डॉक्टर था।

I felt I had to make my presence felt.
मुझे लगता था कि मेरी मौजूदगी लोगों पर असर डालनी चाहिए।

I picked up the comb and ran it through my hair and adjusted the parting so that it looked straight and neat.

Again I heard that sound from above.
फिर से मुझे ऊपर से वही आवाज़ सुनाई दी।

I took a close look at my face in the mirror.
मैंने आईने में अपने चेहरे को ध्यान से देखा।

I made an important decision — I would shave daily and grow a thin moustache to look more handsome.
मैंने एक महत्वपूर्ण फ़ैसला किया — मैं रोज़ दाढ़ी बनाऊँगा और एक पतली मूँछ रखूँगा ताकि और आकर्षक लग सकूँ।   

I was after all a bachelor, and a doctor too on top of it!
आख़िरकार मैं अविवाहित था, और ऊपर से डॉक्टर भी था!

Again came that noise from above.
फिर वही आवाज़ ऊपर से आई।

I got up, paced up and down the room.
मैं उठ खड़ा हुआ और कमरे में इधर-उधर टहलने लगा।

Then another lovely thought struck me. I would marry.
फिर मेरे मन में एक और प्यारा विचार आया। मैं शादी करूँगा।

I would get married to a woman doctor who had plenty of money and a good medical practice.
मैं एक ऐसी महिला डॉक्टर से शादी करूँगा जिसके पास ढेर सारा पैसा हो और अच्छा-ख़ासा मेडिकल प्रैक्टिस हो।

She had to be fat; for a valid reason.
वह मोटी होनी चाहिए; और इसका एक वाजिब कारण भी था।

If I made some silly mistake and needed to run away she should not be able to run after me and catch me!
अगर मुझसे कोई मूर्खतापूर्ण गलती हो जाए और मुझे भागना पड़े, तो वह मेरे पीछे भागकर मुझे पकड़ न सके!

With such thoughts in my mind I resumed my seat in the chair in front of the table.
ऐसे ही विचारों के साथ मैं मेज़ के सामने रखी कुर्सी पर फिर से बैठ गया।

There were no more sounds from above.
ऊपर से अब कोई आवाज़ नहीं आ रही थी।

Suddenly there came a dull thud as if a rubber tube had fallen to the ground … surely nothing to worry about.
अचानक एक हल्की धप्प जैसी आवाज़ हुई, जैसे कोई रबड़ की नली ज़मीन पर गिरी हो… निश्चित ही इसमें घबराने वाली कोई बात नहीं थी।

Even so I thought I would turn around and take a look.
फिर भी मैंने सोचा कि मुड़कर देख लूँ।

No sooner had I turned than a fat snake wriggled over the back of the chair and landed on my shoulder.
जैसे ही मैं मुड़ा, एक मोटा साँप कुर्सी की पीठ से लहराता हुआ आकर मेरे कंधे पर गिरा।

The snake’s landing on me and my turning were simultaneous.
साँप का मुझ पर गिरना और मेरा मुड़ना, दोनों एक साथ हुआ।

I didn’t jump. I didn’t tremble. I didn’t cry out.
मैंने न तो उछाल मारी, न काँपा, न ही चिल्लाया।

There was no time to do any such thing.
ऐसा करने का समय ही नहीं था।

The snake slithered along my shoulder and coiled around my left arm above the elbow.
साँप मेरे कंधे से सरककर मेरी बाईं भुजा पर कोहनी के ऊपर लिपट गया।

The hood was spread out and its head was hardly three or four inches from my face!
उसका फन फैला हुआ था और उसका सिर मेरे चेहरे से मुश्किल से तीन-चार इंच दूर था!

It would not be correct to say merely that I sat there holding my breath. I was turned to stone.
यह कहना सही नहीं होगा कि मैं केवल साँस रोके बैठा था। मैं तो पत्थर का बन गया था।

But my mind was very active.
लेकिन मेरा दिमाग़ बहुत सक्रिय था।

The door opened into darkness. The room was surrounded by darkness.
दरवाज़ा अँधेरे में खुलता था। कमरा चारों तरफ़ से अँधेरे से घिरा था।

In the light of the lamp I sat there like a stone image in the flesh.
लालटेन की रोशनी में मैं वहाँ मांस का बना पत्थर का पुतला-सा बैठा था।

I felt then the great presence of the creator of this world and this universe. God was there.
तभी मैंने इस दुनिया और इस ब्रह्मांड के रचयिता की महान उपस्थिति को महसूस किया। वहाँ भगवान थे।

Suppose I said something and he did not like it . . .
मान लो मैंने कुछ कहा और उन्हें वह पसंद न आया…

I tried in my imagination to write in bright letters outside my little heart the words, ‘O God’.
मैंने अपनी कल्पना में अपने छोटे से दिल के बाहर बड़े-बड़े अक्षरों में लिखने की कोशिश की—‘हे भगवान’।

There was some pain in my left arm.
मेरी बाईं भुजा में कुछ दर्द था।

It was as if a thick leaden rod — no, a rod made of molten fire — was slowly but powerfully crushing my arm.

The arm was beginning to be drained of all strength. What could I do?
भुजा की सारी ताक़त चूस ली जा रही थी। मैं क्या कर सकता था?

At my slightest movement the snake would strike me! Death lurked four inches away.
मेरी ज़रा-सी हलचल पर साँप मुझे डस लेता! मौत चार इंच की दूरी पर मंडरा रही थी।

Suppose it struck, what was the medicine I had to take? There were no medicines in the room.
अगर उसने डस लिया तो मुझे कौन-सी दवा लेनी चाहिए? कमरे में कोई दवा भी नहीं थी।

I was but a poor, foolish and stupid doctor.
मैं तो केवल एक ग़रीब, मूर्ख और बेवकूफ़ डॉक्टर था।

I forgot my danger and smiled feebly at myself.
मैं अपना ख़तरा भूल गया और अपने आप पर हल्की-सी मुस्कान दी।

It seemed as if God appreciated that.
ऐसा लगा जैसे भगवान ने इसे सराहा हो।

The snake turned its head. It looked into the mirror and saw its reflection.
साँप ने अपना सिर मोड़ा। उसने आईने में देखा और अपना प्रतिबिंब देखा।

I do not claim that it was the first snake that had ever looked into a mirror.
मैं यह दावा नहीं करता कि वह पहला साँप था जिसने कभी आईने में देखा हो।

But it was certain that the snake was looking into the mirror.
लेकिन यह निश्चित था कि साँप आईने में देख रहा था।

Was it admiring its own beauty?
क्या वह अपनी ही सुंदरता की प्रशंसा कर रहा था?

Was it trying to make an important decision about growing a moustache or using eye shadow and mascara or wearing a vermilion spot on its forehead?
क्या वह यह महत्वपूर्ण फ़ैसला करने की कोशिश कर रहा था कि उसे मूँछें रखनी चाहिए या आई-शैडो और मस्कारा लगाना चाहिए या फिर माथे पर सिंदूर का टीका लगाना चाहिए?

I did not know anything for certain. What sex was this snake, was it male or female? I will never know;
मुझे कुछ भी निश्चित रूप से पता नहीं था। यह साँप नर था या मादा? मैं कभी नहीं जान पाऊँगा;

for the snake unwound itself from my arm and slowly slithered into my lap.
क्योंकि साँप ने मेरी भुजा से खुद को खोला और धीरे-धीरे मेरी गोद में सरक आया।

From there it crept onto the table and moved towards the mirror.
वहाँ से वह मेज़ पर चढ़ा और आईने की ओर बढ़ा।

Perhaps it wanted to enjoy its reflection at closer quarters.
शायद वह अपने प्रतिबिंब को और पास से देखना चाहता था।

I was no mere image cut in granite. I was suddenly a man of flesh and blood.
मैं अब कोई ग्रेनाइट में तराशा गया पुतला नहीं था। मैं अचानक मांस और ख़ून से बना इंसान था।

Still holding my breath I got up from the chair.
अब भी साँस रोके हुए मैं कुर्सी से उठा।

I quietly went out through the door into the veranda.
मैं धीरे से दरवाज़े से बाहर बरामदे में चला गया।

From there I leapt into the yard and ran for all I was worth.
वहाँ से मैं आँगन में कूदा और जितनी तेज़ दौड़ सकता था उतनी तेज़ भागा।

“Phew !” Each of us heaved a sigh of relief.
“ऊँह!” हम सबने राहत की साँस ली।

Somebody asked, “Doctor, is your wife very fat?”
किसी ने पूछा, “डॉक्टर, क्या आपकी पत्नी बहुत मोटी है?”

“No,” the doctor said. “God willed otherwise. My life companion is a thin reedy person with the gift of a sprinter.”
“नहीं,” डॉक्टर ने कहा। “भगवान की मर्ज़ी कुछ और थी। मेरी जीवन संगिनी एक पतली-दुबली और तेज़ दौड़ने वाली महिला है।”

Someone else asked, “Doctor, when you ran did the snake follow you?”
किसी और ने पूछा, “डॉक्टर, जब आप भागे तो क्या साँप आपके पीछे आया?”

The doctor replied, “I ran and ran till I reached a friend’s house.
डॉक्टर ने उत्तर दिया, “मैं भागता रहा, भागता रहा, जब तक कि मैं एक दोस्त के घर नहीं पहुँच गया।

Immediately I smeared oil all over myself and took a bath. I changed into fresh clothes.
तुरंत मैंने अपने पूरे शरीर पर तेल लगाया और स्नान किया। मैंने ताज़े कपड़े पहने।

The next morning at about eight-thirty I took my friend and one or two others to my room to move my things from there.
अगली सुबह लगभग साढ़े आठ बजे मैं अपने दोस्त और एक-दो लोगों को अपने कमरे में सामान हटाने के लिए ले गया।

But we found we had little to carry. Some thief had removed most of my things.
लेकिन हमें बहुत कम सामान मिला। किसी चोर ने मेरा ज़्यादातर सामान चुरा लिया था।

The room had been cleaned out! But not really, the thief had left behind one thing as a final insult!’
कमरा बिल्कुल साफ़ कर दिया गया था! लेकिन नहीं, चोर ने एक चीज़ अंतिम अपमान के रूप में छोड़ दी थी!’

“What was that?” I asked.
“वह क्या थी?” मैंने पूछा।

The doctor said, “My vest, the dirty one.
डॉक्टर ने कहा, “मेरी बनियान, गंदी वाली।

The fellow had such a sense of cleanliness…!
उस आदमी को सफ़ाई का इतना ख़याल था…!

The rascal could have taken it and used it after washing it with soap and water.”
वह कमीना उसे ले जाकर साबुन-पानी से धोकर इस्तेमाल कर सकता था।”

“Did you see the snake the next day, doctor?”
“क्या आपने अगले दिन साँप को देखा, डॉक्टर?”

The doctor laughed, “I’ve never seen it since. It was a snake which was taken with its own beauty!”
डॉक्टर हँसकर बोले, “मैंने उसे फिर कभी नहीं देखा। वह एक ऐसा साँप था जो अपनी ही सुंदरता में खोया हुआ था!”
