The Ganga is our National River… reaches the plains.
हिंदी अनुवाद
गंगा हमारी राष्ट्रीय नदी है। यह विश्व धरोहरों में से एक है। गंगा भारत की जीवनरेखा है और हमारे देश की सबसे महत्वपूर्ण नदियों में से एक है। इसे पवित्र माना जाता है और माँ गंगा के रूप में पूजा जाता है।
गंगा अपनी यात्रा गोमुख से शुरू करती है। गोमुख हिमालय में बर्फ से बनी एक गुफा है। जब बर्फ पिघलती है तो उसका पानी एक छोटी धारा के रूप में बाहर निकलता है। पहाड़ों से नीचे उतरते समय अनेक छोटी-छोटी धाराएँ इसमें मिलती जाती हैं। इस प्रकार गंगा का आकार बड़ा होता जाता है। पहाड़ों में इसका प्रवाह बहुत तेज़ होता है और मैदानों में पहुँचते-पहुँचते यह और चौड़ी हो जाती है।

गंगा हरिद्वार में मैदानों में प्रवेश करती है। इसके बाद यह भारत के अनेक गाँवों और शहरों से होकर बहती है। गंगा के दोनों किनारों पर हरे-भरे खेत दिखाई देते हैं।
मैदानों में कई बड़ी नदियाँ गंगा में मिलती हैं। यमुना और सरस्वती नदियाँ प्रयागराज (इलाहाबाद) में गंगा से मिलती हैं। इन तीनों नदियों के संगम को त्रिवेणी संगम कहा जाता है। यह स्थान बहुत पवित्र माना जाता है और इसे तीर्थराज प्रयाग भी कहते हैं।

हिंदी अनुवाद
प्रयागराज का कुंभ मेला विश्व का सबसे बड़ा धार्मिक मेला माना जाता है। बहुत-से हिन्दू मानते हैं कि गंगा में पवित्र स्नान करने से मनुष्य के पाप धुल जाते हैं।
कई बड़े शहरों से होकर बहने के बाद गंगा समुद्र की ओर बढ़ती है। समुद्र के पास पहुँचने पर इसकी गति धीमी हो जाती है और अंत में यह बंगाल की खाड़ी में मिल जाती है। जहाँ गंगा समुद्र से मिलती है, उस स्थान को गंगा सागर कहा जाता है।
इसलिए गंगा की स्वच्छता और पवित्रता बनाए रखना हम सभी की जिम्मेदारी है।
