7-THE HONEST WOODCUTTER
Once there was a woodcutter, who lived in a village.
एक बार की बात है, एक लकड़हारा था जो एक गाँव में रहता था।
He was a very honest man.
वह एक बहुत ही ईमानदार आदमी था।
One day he was cutting wood with his axe.
एक दिन वह अपनी कुल्हाड़ी से लकड़ी काट रहा था।
It was a very hot day.
बहुत गर्म दिन था।
He felt thirsty and went to the river to drink water.
उसे प्यास लगी और वह पानी पीने के लिए नदी की ओर गया।
His axe slipped accidentally from his hand and fell into the river.
उसके हाथ से कुल्हाड़ी गलती से फिसल गई और नदी में गिर गई।
The woodcutter started crying.
लकड़हारा रोने लगा।
(The River Goddess heard his cry and felt pity on him. She came out of the water.)
(नदी की देवी ने उसकी रोने की आवाज़ सुनी और उस पर दया आई। वह पानी से बाहर आईं।)
Goddess: Why are you crying?
देवी: तुम क्यों रो रहे हो?
Woodcutter: My axe has fallen into the river. What will I do now? How will I earn for my family?
लकड़हारा: मेरी कुल्हाड़ी नदी में गिर गई है। अब मैं क्या करूँगा? अपने परिवार के लिए कमाई कैसे करूँगा?
(The Goddess went into the water and came out with a golden axe.)
(देवी पानी में गईं और एक सुनहरी कुल्हाड़ी लेकर बाहर आईं।)
Goddess: Is this your axe, gentleman?
देवी: क्या यह तुम्हारी कुल्हाड़ी है, सज्जन?
Woodcutter: No, no. This is a golden axe but my axe was made of iron.
लकड़हारा: नहीं-नहीं। यह तो सोने की कुल्हाड़ी है, मेरी कुल्हाड़ी तो लोहे की थी।
(The Goddess went into the water again and came out with a silver axe.)
(देवी फिर पानी में गईं और एक चांदी की कुल्हाड़ी लेकर बाहर आईं।)
Goddess: Is this your axe, dear?
देवी: क्या यह तुम्हारी कुल्हाड़ी है, प्रिय?
Woodcutter: No, no. This is a silver axe but my axe was made of iron.
लकड़हारा: नहीं-नहीं। यह तो चांदी की कुल्हाड़ी है, मेरी कुल्हाड़ी तो लोहे की थी।
(The Goddess went into the water again and came out with an iron axe.)
(देवी फिर पानी में गईं और लोहे की कुल्हाड़ी लेकर बाहर आईं।)
Goddess: Is this yours?
देवी: क्या यह तुम्हारी है?
Woodcutter: Yes, yes! This is mine.
लकड़हारा: हाँ, हाँ! यही मेरी है।
Goddess: You are a very honest man. I am pleased with you. I will reward you for your honesty.
देवी: तुम बहुत ईमानदार व्यक्ति हो। मैं तुमसे प्रसन्न हूँ। मैं तुम्हें तुम्हारी ईमानदारी का इनाम दूँगी।
(The River Goddess gave all the three axes to the woodcutter.)
(देवी ने लकड़हारे को तीनों कुल्हाड़ियाँ दे दीं।)
Woodcutter: Thank you, Goddess! You have saved me and my family.
लकड़हारा: धन्यवाद देवी! आपने मुझे और मेरे परिवार को बचा लिया।
Moral: Honesty is the best policy.
