THE OLD KAKI

There was an old lady called ‘Kaki’. She crept because her hands and feet were very weak.
एक बूढ़ी महिला थी जिसका नाम ‘काकी’ था। वह रेंगकर चलती थी क्योंकि उसके हाथ-पाँव बहुत कमजोर थे।

Her husband had died long ago. She lived with her nephew, Buddhiram.
उसके पति की बहुत पहले मृत्यु हो चुकी थी। वह अपने भतीजे, बुद्धीराम के साथ रहती थी।

She had transferred all her property to him. Rupa was Buddhiram’s wife.
उसने अपनी सारी संपत्ति उसे दे दी थी। रूपा बुद्धीराम की पत्नी थी।

Buddhiram had two sons and a daughter ‘Ladli’.
बुद्धीराम के दो बेटे और एक बेटी ‘लाडली’ थी।

The boys never behaved properly with ‘Kaki’. They used to tease her a lot.
लड़के कभी भी काकी से ठीक व्यवहार नहीं करते थे। वे उसे बहुत चिढ़ाया करते थे।

Kaki would cry out but no one listened to her.
काकी चिल्लाती थी, लेकिन कोई उसकी बात नहीं सुनता था।

Ladli was the only one who had sympathy for ‘Kaki’.
लाडली ही अकेली थी जिसे काकी के लिए सहानुभूति थी।

It was an evening, shehnai was being played at Buddhiram’s doorstep.
एक शाम, बुद्धीराम के दरवाज़े पर शहनाई बज रही थी।

It was his elder son’s engagement. Celebrations were going on.
उसके बड़े बेटे की सगाई थी। उत्सव चल रहा था।

‘Purees’ were being fried in ‘Kadhai’. The sweet smell of ‘ghee’ and spices was in the air.
कढ़ाई में पूरियां तली जा रही थीं। घी और मसालों की मीठी खुशबू हवा में फैली हुई थी।

Kaki was sitting in her room and it was dark inside. She could smell the crispy and sizzling purees.
काकी अपने कमरे में बैठी थी और अंदर अंधेरा था। उसे कुरकुरी और छनकती पूरियों की खुशबू आ रही थी।

Images of purees floated before her eyes. She began to move slowly and crept close to the ‘kadhai’.
उसकी आँखों के सामने पूरियों की तस्वीरें घूम रही थीं। वह धीरे-धीरे चलने लगी और कढ़ाई के पास आ गई।

When Rupa saw Kaki sitting close to the kadhai, she lost her temper and shouted abuses.
जब रूपा ने काकी को कढ़ाई के पास बैठे देखा, तो वह गुस्से में आ गई और उसे डाँटने लगी।

Old Kaki didn’t speak a single word. She returned to her room feeling insulted.
बूढ़ी काकी ने एक शब्द भी नहीं कहा। वह अपमानित महसूस करते हुए अपने कमरे में लौट गई।

The dinner was ready. All the guests had started eating.
रात का खाना तैयार था। सभी मेहमान खाना शुरू कर चुके थे।

Kaki in her room thought not to go until she was called.
काकी ने अपने कमरे में सोचा कि जब तक बुलाया नहीं जाएगा, वह नहीं जाएगी।

The pleasant smell of food was tempting but no one came to call her for dinner.
खाने की मनभावन खुशबू लुभा रही थी, लेकिन उसे बुलाने कोई नहीं आया।

She decided to go outside thinking she is not a guest.
उसने सोचा कि वह मेहमान नहीं है, और बाहर जाने का निर्णय लिया।

She crept into the courtyard but one of the guests saw her and shouted.
वह आँगन में रेंगते हुए पहुँची, लेकिन एक मेहमान ने उसे देख लिया और चिल्ला उठा।

Pandit Buddhiram became furious and dragged Kaki into the room.
पंडित बुद्धीराम गुस्से में आ गया और काकी को कमरे में खींच ले गया।

Ladli felt bad and thought, “What if Kaki had eaten before the guests? Would she have eaten all the purees?”
लाडली को बुरा लगा और उसने सोचा, “अगर काकी मेहमानों से पहले खा लेती, तो क्या वह सारी पूरियां खा जाती?”

It was eleven in the night. Everyone was sleeping. Ladli had not eaten her purees yet.
रात के ग्यारह बजे थे। सभी सो चुके थे। लाडली ने अभी तक अपनी पूरियां नहीं खाई थीं।

She put them in her doll’s basket and went to Kaki’s room.
उसने उन्हें अपनी गुड़िया की टोकरी में रखा और काकी के कमरे में चली गई।

Kaki asked, “Has your mother sent these?” Ladli replied, “No, it’s my share.”
काकी ने पूछा, “क्या तुम्हारी माँ ने यह भेजा है?” लाडली ने कहा, “नहीं, यह मेरा हिस्सा है।”

Kaki finished all the purees but she was still hungry.
काकी ने सारी पूरियां खा लीं, लेकिन वह अब भी भूखी थी।

Kaki said to Ladli, “Child, bring some more.” Ladli replied, “If I wake her up she will get angry.”
काकी ने लाडली से कहा, “बेटी, और ले आ।” लाडली ने कहा, “अगर मैं उन्हें जगाऊँगी तो वह गुस्सा करेंगी।”

Kaki said, “Take me to the place where the guests ate.”
काकी ने कहा, “मुझे वहाँ ले चलो जहाँ मेहमानों ने खाना खाया।”

Ladli made her sit among the ‘pattals’. Kaki began to eat the food left by the guests.
लाडली ने उसे पत्तलों के बीच बिठा दिया। काकी मेहमानों का बचा हुआ खाना खाने लगी।

Rupa woke up and saw Kaki picking the leftover food. She felt sorry for her.
रूपा जागी और काकी को बचा हुआ खाना उठाते हुए देखा। उसे उसके लिए दुख हुआ।

She realized Kaki was hungry even on a feast day. Her eyes filled with tears.
उसे एहसास हुआ कि दावत के दिन भी काकी भूखी रही। उसकी आँखें आँसुओं से भर गईं।

It was midnight. Rupa went to Kaki’s room with food and said, “Please forgive me.”
आधी रात हो चुकी थी। रूपा खाने के साथ काकी के कमरे में गई और बोली, “मुझे माफ कर दीजिए।”

Kaki forgave her and blessed her soulfully.
काकी ने उसे माफ कर दिया और दिल से आशीर्वाद दिया।

One day a lion lay down under a shady tree to sleep.
While he slept, a playful mouse ran over his body. The lion woke up.
He put out his great paw and was just going to kill the mouse.
The little mouse begged for mercy.
The lion took pity on him and let him go.
The mouse thanked the lion. “I will try to repay your kindness”, said the mouse.
The lion laughed at this.
Several days passed by. Then, while hunting in the forest, the lion was caught in a trap.
He struggled and roared to get free.
The little mouse heard the noise and ran to help him.
At once he began gnawing at the massive ropes with his sharp teeth.
After much hard work, he nibbled through the ropes at last the lion was set free.
Moral: Good deeds are rewarded.
