She wanted to take up her father’s profession when she will grow up.

As Gayatri was tying her shoelaces, she heard a news flashed on radio.
जब गायत्री अपने जूतों के फीते बाँध रही थी, तभी उसने रेडियो पर एक खबर सुनी।

A cyclonic storm was expected to hit the village within the next twenty four hours.
अगले चौबीस घंटों के भीतर एक चक्रवाती तूफ़ान गाँव से टकराने की संभावना थी।

She knew that the cyclone would bring strong wind, heavy rains and high tides in the sea.
उसे पता था कि चक्रवात तेज़ हवाएँ, भारी बारिश और समुद्र में ऊँची लहरें लाएगा।

It would topple trees and damage houses.
यह पेड़ों को गिरा देगा और घरों को नुकसान पहुँचाएगा।

There would be heavy rain which could cause flood.
भारी बारिश होगी जिससे बाढ़ आ सकती है।

She rushed outside to warn her father.
वह अपने पिता को चेतावनी देने के लिए बाहर दौड़ी।

Both of them heard the loud clap of thunder.
दोनों ने तेज़ गरज की आवाज़ सुनी।

Big drops of rain started falling.
बड़ी-बड़ी बारिश की बूंदें गिरने लगीं।

They could see the waves of the sea rising higher and higher.
वे देख सकते थे कि समुद्र की लहरें और ऊँची हो रही थीं।

It was late in the evening. The cyclone had hit the area!
शाम हो चुकी थी। चक्रवात इस इलाके से टकरा चुका था!

It had been raining continuously.

Flood water had already entered Gayatri’s house.
बाढ़ का पानी पहले ही गायत्री के घर में घुस चुका था।

She had placed all the small household items like food, articles, utensils, candles and matchboxes on beds, tables and chairs.
उसने खाना, सामान, बर्तन, मोमबत्तियाँ और माचिस जैसे छोटे घरेलू सामान बिस्तरों, मेज़ों और कुर्सियों पर रख दिए थे।

By the morning a lot of water had entered the house.
सुबह तक घर में बहुत सारा पानी भर चुका था।

After an uncomfortable night, Gayatri went to her terrace and looked around.
एक असुविधाजनक रात के बाद, गायत्री अपनी छत पर गई और चारों ओर देखा।

The entire area was submerged in water.
पूरा इलाका पानी में डूबा हुआ था।

Only a few houses could be seen.

The little huts near her house could not be seen due to floods.

The homeless people were sitting on tree stumps and at other places which were not submerged.
बेघर लोग पेड़ों के ठूँठों और अन्य सूखी जगहों पर बैठे हुए थे।

Gayatri thought that she should do something.
गायत्री ने सोचा कि उसे कुछ करना चाहिए।

She swam towards the boat lying outside her house.
वह अपने घर के बाहर पड़ी नाव की ओर तैरकर गई।

She rowed powerfully towards the marooned people.
उसने नाव चलाकर फंसे हुए लोगों की ओर बढ़ाई।

She helped them board the boat and rowed to the town hall.
उसने उन्हें नाव पर चढ़ने में मदद की और टाउन हॉल की ओर ले गई।

There they were received by the district authorities.
वहाँ ज़िला अधिकारियों ने उनका स्वागत किया।

Then she returned home and requested her mother to give her some clothes, food, matchboxes and candles.
फिर वह घर लौटी और अपनी माँ से कुछ कपड़े, खाना, माचिस और मोमबत्तियाँ देने को कहा।

She packed them in a waterproof bag and returned to the town hall.
उसने उन्हें एक जलरोधी थैले में पैक किया और टाउन हॉल वापस गई।

She handed over the materials to the supervisor of the temporary shelter who distributed them to the people.
उसने सामान अस्थायी आश्रय स्थल के प्रभारी को दे दिया, जिसने उन्हें लोगों में बाँट दिया।

They felt warm and happy.
वे गर्म और खुश महसूस कर रहे थे।

Gayatri was happy too that she could do a little to help them.
गायत्री भी खुश थी कि वह उनकी थोड़ी मदद कर सकी।

She had helped her neighbours in their hour of need.
उसने अपने पड़ोसियों की ज़रूरत के समय मदद की थी।

In the hour of crisis most people ask for help but courageous people render help to others.
संकट के समय अधिकतर लोग मदद माँगते हैं लेकिन साहसी लोग दूसरों की मदद करते हैं।
