रविवार का दिन था और स्कूल बंद था। गायत्री बहुत उत्साहित थी क्योंकि वह अपने पिता के साथ समुद्र में मछली पकड़ने जाने वाली थी।
उसके पिता एक मछुआरे थे। वे प्रतिदिन समुद्र में मछली पकड़ने जाते थे। उन्होंने गायत्री से वादा किया था कि वे उसे भी मछली पकड़ना सिखाएँगे।
गायत्री बड़ी होकर अपने पिता का ही पेशा अपनाना चाहती थी।

जब गायत्री अपने जूते के फीते बाँध रही थी, तभी रेडियो पर समाचार आया कि अगले 24 घंटे के भीतर एक चक्रवाती तूफ़ान गाँव से टकराएगा।
वह जानती थी कि तूफ़ान तेज़ हवा, भारी वर्षा और समुद्र में ऊँची लहरें लाएगा। इससे पेड़ गिर सकते थे, घर टूट सकते थे और बाढ़ आ सकती थी।
वह तुरंत अपने पिता को चेतावनी देने बाहर भागी।
कुछ ही देर में तेज़ गरज के साथ बारिश शुरू हो गई और समुद्र की लहरें ऊँची उठने लगीं।

सुबह गायत्री छत पर गई। उसने देखा कि चारों ओर बाढ़ का पानी फैला हुआ था। कई लोग अपने घरों से बेघर होकर पेड़ों के ठूँठों और ऊँचे स्थानों पर बैठे थे।
गायत्री ने नाव लेकर उन लोगों को सुरक्षित टाउन हॉल पहुँचाया।
फिर वह घर लौटी और अपनी माँ से कपड़े, भोजन, मोमबत्तियाँ और माचिस लेकर उन्हें राहत शिविर में पहुँचा दिया।
लोग बहुत खुश हुए और गायत्री भी संतुष्ट हुई कि उसने ज़रूरतमंद लोगों की मदद की।
संकट के समय साहसी लोग केवल सहायता नहीं माँगते, बल्कि दूसरों की सहायता भी करते हैं।
