Sanjay was a student of class 7.
संजय सातवीं कक्षा का छात्र था।

He lived with his parents in the village, Shantipur.
वह अपने माता-पिता के साथ शांतिपुर गाँव में रहता था।

He had lost one of his legs in an accident.
एक दुर्घटना में उसका एक पैर चला गया था।

He always felt that everyone looked at his leg and laughed at the way he walked.
उसे हमेशा लगता था कि सभी लोग उसके पैर को देखते हैं और उसके चलने के तरीके पर हँसते हैं।

So he always tried to avoid people.
इसलिए वह हमेशा लोगों से बचने की कोशिश करता था।

(One morning when Sanjay did not get up, his mother woke him up.)
(एक सुबह जब संजय नहीं उठा, तो उसकी माँ ने उसे जगाया।)

Mother: Wake up Sanjay! You are getting late.
माँ: उठो संजय! तुम देर कर रहे हो।

Sanjay: Mother, I don’t want to go to school.
संजय: माँ, मुझे स्कूल नहीं जाना है।

Mother: Why Sanjay?
माँ: क्यों संजय?

Sanjay: I feel neglected maa. My schoolmates don’t like my company.
संजय: मुझे उपेक्षित महसूस होता है माँ। मेरे सहपाठियों को मेरा साथ पसंद नहीं है।

Mother: My dear child, you are a strong boy. Don’t lose heart. You have so many good qualities. A day will come when everyone will praise you.
माँ: मेरे प्यारे बच्चे, तुम एक मज़बूत लड़के हो। हिम्मत मत हारो। तुम्हारे पास बहुत सी अच्छी खूबियाँ हैं। एक दिन आएगा जब सब तुम्हारी प्रशंसा करेंगे।

Sanjay: (half-heartedly) Okay mother. I’ll go.
संजय: (मन मारकर) ठीक है माँ, मैं जाऊँगा।

Sanjay walked slowly to the school.
संजय धीरे-धीरे स्कूल की ओर चला।

As he entered the school, he tottered and fell down.
जैसे ही वह स्कूल में दाखिल हुआ, वह लड़खड़ाया और गिर पड़ा।

He noticed that the children were staring at him.
उसने देखा कि बच्चे उसे घूर रहे थे।

Suddenly they burst into laughter.
अचानक वे हँसने लगे।

He felt miserable.
वह बहुत दुखी हुआ।

He thought of his mother’s words.
उसे अपनी माँ की बातें याद आईं।

He chinned up and went to the class.
उसने हिम्मत जुटाई और कक्षा में चला गया।

During the break he tried to talk to Amit who sat beside him. “Your watch is very nice Amit”, he said, but Amit turned away towards Vipin.
अवकाश के समय उसने अपने बगल में बैठने वाले अमित से बात करने की कोशिश की। उसने कहा, “तुम्हारी घड़ी बहुत अच्छी है अमित,” लेकिन अमित विपिन की ओर मुड़ गया।

Amit pretended not to have heard him.
अमित ने ऐसा दिखाया जैसे उसने सुना ही नहीं।

Sanjay moved closer to Amit so that he could be heard easily.
संजय अमित के पास और खिसक गया ताकि वह आसानी से सुन सके।

Sanjay: Hey Amit, which is your favourite game? Do you like swimming?
संजय: अरे अमित, तुम्हारा पसंदीदा खेल कौन सा है? क्या तुम्हें तैरना पसंद है?

Amit: (without looking at him) Yes, I like swimming.
अमित: (उसे देखे बिना) हाँ, मुझे तैरना पसंद है।

Sanjay: I also like swimming.
संजय: मुझे भी तैरना पसंद है।

(Suddenly everyone stopped talking and looked at him.)
(अचानक सभी ने बात करना बंद कर दिया और उसकी ओर देखने लगे।)

Arun: (in disbelief) Do you know how to swim?
अरुण: (अविश्वास से) क्या तुम्हें तैरना आता है?

(All the students started laughing.)
(सभी छात्र हँसने लगे।)

Sanjay was very upset.
संजय बहुत परेशान हो गया।

When he reached home that day, at once his mother came to know that something had gone wrong.
जब वह उस दिन घर पहुँचा, तो उसकी माँ को तुरंत पता चल गया कि कुछ गड़बड़ है।

Mother: What happened son? Why are you so upset?
माँ: क्या हुआ बेटा? तुम इतने परेशान क्यों हो?

Sanjay: I will never go to school again. The students are not friendly with me. They don’t even share anything with me.
संजय: मैं अब कभी स्कूल नहीं जाऊँगा। छात्र मेरे साथ दोस्ताना व्यवहार नहीं करते। वे मुझसे कुछ भी साझा नहीं करते।

Mother: Don’t get upset son. Be friendly with them and very soon things will change.
माँ: परेशान मत हो बेटा। उनके साथ मित्रवत रहो और बहुत जल्द चीजें बदल जाएँगी।

The next morning, when Sanjay was going to school, he saw a girl drowning in the canal near the school.
अगली सुबह, जब संजय स्कूल जा रहा था, उसने स्कूल के पास नहर में एक लड़की को डूबते हुए देखा।

He immediately offered his crutch to the girl. She held it.
उसने तुरंत लड़की को अपनी बैसाखी थमा दी। उसने उसे पकड़ लिया।

The flow of the water was rapid.
पानी का बहाव तेज़ था।

Sanjay caught the hand of the girl tightly.
संजय ने लड़की का हाथ कसकर पकड़ लिया।

After trying hard, he could pull her to the bank.
कड़ी मेहनत के बाद, वह उसे किनारे तक खींच लाया।

Sanjay was astonished when he saw the face of the girl he rescued. She was Amit’s sister, Rita.
जब संजय ने बचाई गई लड़की का चेहरा देखा तो वह चौंक गया। वह अमित की बहन रीता थी।

By then many people had gathered. Everyone was praising Sanjay.
तब तक वहाँ बहुत से लोग इकट्ठा हो गए थे। सभी संजय की प्रशंसा कर रहे थे।

The next day when he reached the school, the students were standing in a queue and were clapping for him.
अगले दिन जब वह स्कूल पहुँचा, तो छात्र कतार में खड़े होकर उसकी तालियाँ बजा रहे थे।

Every student wanted to talk and shake hands with him.
हर छात्र उससे बात करना और हाथ मिलाना चाहता था।

Meanwhile, Amit came to him and said—
उसी बीच, अमित उसके पास आया और बोला—

Amit: I am sorry, please forgive me for my misbehaviour.
अमित: मुझे माफ़ कर दो, मेरे गलत व्यवहार के लिए क्षमा करो।

Sanjay: It’s okay. You are my friend. Don’t feel sorry.
संजय: कोई बात नहीं। तुम मेरे दोस्त हो। दुखी मत हो।

In the morning assembly, the principal of the school called Sanjay onto the stage.
सुबह की प्रार्थना सभा में, स्कूल के प्राचार्य ने संजय को मंच पर बुलाया।

Sanjay stepped forward confidently onto the stage to accept the ‘Bravery Award’ of the year from the principal.
संजय आत्मविश्वास से मंच पर आगे बढ़ा और प्राचार्य से वर्ष का ‘साहस पुरस्कार’ ग्रहण किया।

Now Sanjay is everyone’s favourite.
अब संजय सबका प्रिय है।
