10 सितम्बर 1965 की सुबह भारत और पाकिस्तान के बीच भीषण युद्ध चल रहा था। पाकिस्तान की पैटन टैंकों की एक रेजिमेंट खेमकरण सेक्टर में भिखीविंड-अमृतसर मार्ग से आगे बढ़ रही थी और चीमा गाँव तक पहुँच चुकी थी। इसी क्षेत्र में 4 ग्रेनेडियर्स कंपनी के सैनिक दुश्मन का सामना करने के लिए तैयार थे। हवलदार अब्दुल हमीद अपनी जीप पर एक विशेष बंदूक के साथ बैठे थे। वे बहुत अच्छे निशानेबाज थे। उन्होंने जल्दबाज़ी में गोली चलाने के बजाय सही अवसर का इंतजार किया। जैसे ही दुश्मन का एक टैंक उनकी सीमा में आया, उन्होंने सटीक निशाना लगाया। गोली लगते ही वह टैंक आग की लपटों में घिर गया। यह देखकर उनकी पूरी टुकड़ी खुशी से भर उठी।

कुछ ही देर बाद उन्हें दूसरा टैंक दिखाई दिया। उन्होंने तुरंत उस पर निशाना साधकर गोली चलाई और वह भी आग की लपटों में घिर गया। तभी चार और टैंक दिखाई दिए। अब पाकिस्तान की सेना का मुख्य लक्ष्य अब्दुल हमीद को मारना था क्योंकि वे उनके लिए सबसे बड़े खतरे बन चुके थे। दुश्मन ने अपनी तोपों का रुख उनकी ओर कर दिया। लेकिन उनके हमला करने से पहले ही अब्दुल हमीद ने तीसरे टैंक को भी नष्ट कर दिया। तभी दुश्मन का एक गोला उनकी जीप पर आकर लगा। वे गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गए, फिर भी उन्होंने हिम्मत नहीं हारी। उन्होंने अपने साथियों को आदेश दिया, “आगे बढ़ो और लड़ाई जारी रखो।” सभी सैनिकों ने उनके आदेश का पालन किया और पूरी बहादुरी से युद्ध जारी रखा।
