Once upon a time… Everytime he sailed in his boat, he found the river very dirty.

बहुत समय पहले एक राजा नदी के किनारे बने एक महल में रहता था। वह बहुत दुखी था क्योंकि उसके राज्य के लोग गैर-जिम्मेदार (Irresponsible) थे।
जब भी वह अपने रथ में बाहर निकलता, तो सड़कों पर पत्थर और कूड़ा-कचरा बिखरा हुआ देखता।
जब भी वह नाव से नदी में जाता, तो नदी भी गंदी दिखाई देती।
राजा सोचता,
“हाय! मेरे राज्य के लोग इतने गैर-जिम्मेदार क्यों हैं?”

राजा ने लोगों को सबक सिखाने की योजना बनाई।
एक रात वह अपने वज़ीर के साथ सोने के सिक्कों से भरी एक थैली लेकर मुख्य सड़क पर गया।
उसे सड़क के बीच में एक गड्ढा दिखाई दिया। उसने उस गड्ढे में सोने के सिक्के डाल दिए और फिर राजा तथा वज़ीर ने उस गड्ढे को एक बड़े पत्थर से ढक दिया।

अगले दिन एक व्यक्ति कोयले से भरी बैलगाड़ी लेकर वहाँ से गुज़रा।
उसने पत्थर देखा, लेकिन उसे हटाने की बजाय अपनी गाड़ी दूसरी ओर से निकाल ली।
फिर एक व्यक्ति भेड़ों और बकरियों का झुंड लेकर आया। उसने भी पत्थर को हटाने की कोशिश नहीं की।
दिनभर कई लोग उस रास्ते से गुज़रे, लेकिन किसी ने भी सड़क से पत्थर हटाने की ज़िम्मेदारी नहीं निभाई।

हिंदी अनुवाद
अंत में राजा ने पूरे राज्य के लोगों को बुलाया और कहा,
“आओ, इस पत्थर को सड़क से हटाएँ।”
जब पत्थर हटाया गया तो उसके नीचे सोने के सिक्के देखकर सभी लोग आश्चर्यचकित रह गए।
राजा ने कहा,
“यदि तुममें से किसी ने पहले यह पत्थर हटा दिया होता, तो ये सभी सोने के सिक्के उसी के होते। लेकिन किसी ने अपनी जिम्मेदारी नहीं निभाई, इसलिए कोई भी इन सिक्कों का अधिकारी नहीं है।”
राजा ने वज़ीर को आदेश दिया कि सिक्कों को महल में ले जाया जाए।
यह सुनकर सभी लोगों को अपनी गलती का एहसास हुआ और वे शर्मिंदा हो गए।
